The Price of Downtime at Sea

In the shipping industry, time is money in the most literal sense. A vessel that is off-hire - unable to fulfil its charter obligations due to mechanical failure - costs the shipowner $15,000-$20,000 per day in lost charter revenue, plus the direct costs of repairs. For a vessel on a time charter, the owner bears the full financial risk of any off-hire period. For a vessel on a voyage charter, the consequences can include contractual penalties, cargo claims, and reputational damage with charterers.

The most expensive failures are not the small, frequent ones - they are the rare but catastrophic events: a crankshaft failure, a turbocharger seizure, a main bearing failure. These events require specialist repairs, often in ports that lack the necessary facilities, and the lead time for critical spare parts can stretch to months when the vessel is in a remote location.

Sourcing critical spare parts for a vessel on the other side of the world is a logistical and financial challenge that most shore-based managers underestimate until they face it. A crankshaft for a large two-stroke engine is not a stock item - it must be manufactured to order, which takes weeks.

Shipping it to a port in Southeast Asia or West Africa adds more time and cost. Meanwhile, the vessel sits idle, accumulating off-hire costs every day.

Prevention is cheaper than cure. The cost of a comprehensive oil cleanliness programme for a vessel - filtration equipment, inserts, oil analysis - is typically €15,000-€30,000 per year. The cost of a single major engine failure can easily exceed €500,000 when parts, labour, off-hire, and logistics are totalled.

Maintenance Without Stopping

One of the most practical advantages of offline filtration over centrifuge-based systems for marine applications is the ability to perform maintenance while the vessel is underway. A centrifuge service typically requires the unit to be taken offline, which may require a reduction in engine load or a brief stop. An offline filter insert change takes less than 30 minutes, requires no specialist tools, and can be performed by any crew member while the filter continues to protect the oil system.


This means that a vessel running CJC offline filtration can maintain its oil cleanliness programme continuously - including during long ocean passages where port calls are infrequent. The filter insert is simply changed at the next convenient opportunity, and the system continues operating without interruption.
