Varnish Removal Unit

A varnish removal unit is essential when oil degradation leads to valve sticking, turbine trips, filter blockage, and premature oil aging.

The CJC® Varnish Removal Unit (VRU) removes dissolved and suspended soft contaminants from oil systems -even during hot operation, restoring system reliability and extending oil and component life.

CJC® Varnish Removal Unit (VRU) with stainless steel treatment vessel and control panel, designed to remove dissolved and soft contaminants from turbine and hydraulic oil systems.

Why a Varnish Removal Unit Is Needed

Varnish is formed by oil degradation products generated in high-temperature zones such as bearings, pumps, and inline filters. These soft contaminants exist in both dissolved and suspended phases, making them impossible to remove with conventional mechanical or electrostatic filtration.

If not removed, varnish causes:

  • Valve sticking and turbine trips
  • Restricted oil flow and rising oil temperatures
  • Increased wear on bearings and hydraulic components
  • Frequent oil changes and system flushing

A dedicated varnish removal unit targets these soft contaminants before they deposit on critical surfaces .

How CJC® Varnish Removal Technology Works

The CJC® VRU uses polar attraction in optimized, cellulose-based VRi varnish removal inserts to remove oil degradation products safely and continuously.

The process:

Hot oil is drawn from the system tank into the VRU

Dissolved and suspended varnish precursors are captured in the VRi inserts

Oil is returned clean - without chemicals, beads, or additive depletion

Clean oil gradually dissolves existing varnish deposits in the system

In documented cases, varnish levels are typically reduced by 50% within weeks of operation

CJC® Varnish Removal Unit Models

The CJC® VRU range supports oil volumes up to 45,000 liters (11,900 gal) and is suitable for continuous offline operation on live systems.

Typical applications include: Gas and steam turbines,Turbine lube and control oil systems, Hydraulic oil systems & Compressor oil systems
